Before the journey

There are some things that we believe you should consider:

Romanian Citizens:

  • ID or
  • Passport (Valid until 2026)
  • No VISA required

UK Citizens:

Check the entry requirements here.

  • Passport (valid until 2026)
  • No VISA required

USA Citizens:

  • Passport (Valid until 2026)

Indian/Chinese Citizens:

  • Passport (valid until 2026)
  • Tourism Visa – Type C (if holding a UK residence permit, might not be needed, but please check)

Roaming

This is the easiest option to use, however, the most expensive. As Republic of Moldova is not in the European Union, the costs are usually extremely high, especially for mobile data.

I would only use the roaming if you need to be contactable on your phone number for the duration of the trip. If you do not usually use your Roaming, you might need to turn it on before the trip (either in Settings, or by calling your provider).

Pre-paid Sim

I will provide a Pre-Paid Sim which will give you 10 GB data. As Chisinau has wifi everywhere, I don’t think you might need any more data for your trip.

eSim

There are several apps in which you can buy eSims for travelling, however this is still expensive for the offers they have. I compared some apps, and that is what they offer for Republic of Moldova:

Revolut3 GB for 30 days – £9.5 / 5GB for 30 days for £13.35

Breeze – Unlimited Data for 3 days – £15

Yesim – Unlimited GB for 7 days – £15.30

Mobimatter25 GB for 30 days – $16

eSIM Plus – 10 GB for 30 days – $12.88

Apps to download before the trip:

Google Maps

Although it may seem like a minor detail, to ensure you have access to maps even without Wi-Fi or signal, I suggest you search for “Chișinău” on Google Maps before the trip. Then, swipe left to see the available options. The last option will be “Download offline map.” I highly recommend this feature as it guarantees you’ll get to your destination even if your phone doesn’t connect to roaming.

I’ve prepared 3 Google Maps for you, where I’ve saved places to visit and restaurants. By accessing the links, you’ll always have them handy, and you can see them in real-time on the map. And if you get hungry during the walk, you’ll quickly find the nearest saved restaurant.

Currency Exchange

Money can be exchanged both at banks and at private exchange offices in the city. Most banks are open from 10:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday, and exchange offices usually operate from 10:00 to 20:00, without charging a commission.

Below are the indicative exchange rates as of January 30. To avoid losses, make sure the exchange rate isn’t significantly lower, and check for any commissions before making the transaction.

The best way to get around Chișinău is by taxi. They are very affordable and convenient. You can use ride-hailing apps similar to Uber, where you have the option to pay by card. If you hail a taxi on the street, cash payment is usually required, so it’s advisable to carry some local currency with you. Here are the best taxi apps:

A Guide for Food Lovers

Moldova is a culinary treasure, with traditional dishes, savory flavors, and renowned wines. I’ve selected a few of my favorite restaurants and venues for an unforgettable dining experience, whether you’re looking for traditional polenta or a modern twist on classic dishes.

Traditional Food:

  • La Taifas (£) – Known for its rustic atmosphere and generous portions.
  • Popasul Dacilor (££) – Traditional atmosphere, complemented by a fireplace that creates a cozy ambiance and pleasant music, and the food is absolutely delicious.
  • La Plăcinte (£) – A chain of restaurants serving “home-cooked” meals.
  • Andy’s Pizza (£) – A restaurant chain offering an excellent introduction to local flavors. Fast, tasty, diverse, and with moderate prices.

Fine Dining (££-£££):

  • La Sarkis – A restaurant open 24/7 with Armenian cuisine and hookah. For large groups, reserve tables on the upper floor. I recommend: khachapuri adjarian.
  • Zaxi – A rooftop lounge restaurant with live music and excellent cocktails. I recommend the steak and cocktails.
  • Julien Gastro Bistrot – A modern dining experience with molecular cuisine, where the creative menu combines local ingredients with international techniques.
  • Madam Wong – An Asian-inspired menu that’s bold, vibrant, and creative. The dumplings, bao buns, and cocktails are crowd favorites.
  • Lume NeoBistro – Perfect for a fusion of tradition and innovation, with a welcoming atmosphere and a selection of refined wines, ideal for a relaxing and sophisticated experience.
  • Cinar – Brings the rich flavors of Turkish cuisine to the heart of Chișinău. Famous for its freshly baked bread, juicy kebabs, and aromatic spices, this restaurant is a paradise for lovers of Mediterranean and Eastern dishes.

Coffee and Desserts:

  • Crème de la Crème – Great for a divine dessert or a delicious meal. With refined desserts, savory brunches, and a charming Parisian décor, it’s the perfect spot for a culinary experience without outrageous prices. I recommend the Napoleon Cake (similar to Vanilla Slice) and the Kiev Cake.
  • Sincer Gastromarket & Cafe – Perfect for brunch, tea, coffee, or even dinner and drinks. The food is delicious, and the homemade tea is among the best in the city!
  • Delice d’Ange – A cozy and inviting spot in Chișinău, offering a diverse menu perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a relaxed coffee break. I recommend: meat-filled crepes, croissants, and crepes with cheese and ham.
  • Miro – A chic café in Chișinău, where every dessert feels like a taste of Paris. With a stylish atmosphere, excellent coffee, and exquisite pastries, it’s the perfect place for a sweet escape.
  • Crosta – One of the best spots for breakfast & brunch! Delicious dishes, amazing vegan coffee, and top-notch service.
